The Froebel Star, named after it’s inventor, Friedrich Fröbel is a paper decoration, made from four strips of paper folded together. I learnt to make these the first Christmas I spent in Denmark.

Hopefully you can follow the photo tutorial I’ve put together. For clarity, I’ve used four different coloured strips of paper, normally you would use one colour.

1. Cut 4 strips of paper measuring 1 cm x 30 cm (you can vary this sizing, although the ratio of width to length needs to remain the same) I use this size as it an be cut from the long edge of an A4 piece of paper. These strips make a star approx. 4cm across. Fold each strip in half.

2. Weave the four strips together as illustrated

3. Pull together strips tight, if you’ve done step 2 correctly they will hold together.

4. Turn over to make sure the long strips emerge from the left hand side of the square

5. Starting with the top strip (purple) fold down over the centre square.

6. Repeat for the next strips counter clockwise – fold in the green strip and then the red strip

7. Finally fold the remaining (grey) strip over the centre square and thread under the first strip that was folded (purple)

8. Take the top right (red) strip and fold a 45 degree angle to make a point

9. Fold another angle, so the strip is now parallel to the centre square

10. Fold the triangle created in half to make a right angled triangle at the top, and so the strip is now laying over the centre square.

11. Tuck the free end of the strip under the grey strip and you should now have something like this

12. Repeat for the remaining 3 strips (always the right hand strip if the strips are at the top) and you should end up with something like this

13. Turn over and repeat the process for the 4 strips on the other side, which are now the right hand strips. You should end up with flat ‘star’ with eight points

Now to make it 3d

14. Take one of the strips emerging from the centre square (in this case purple) and fold it back out the way. Take the green strip and curve it round so that you can thread it under the loop where the purple strip is emerging. It should emerge from the purple point, pull gently and the strip will form a point.

15. Repeat for the other 3 strips on the top side, turn over and follow the same process on the other side

16. Cut the excess ends

17. Ta da!
