Day 1

Arrived in the Oban area and greeted with bright sunshine, explored along the coast south of Oban, Carnassarie Castle, standing stones and a trip over the Atlantic Bridge to Seil.

Day 2

FrostGlen Nevis

A trip north of Oban, to a very frosty Glen Nevis, the sun was doing it’s very best to shine through. A rather icy walk a little way up the gorge and then onwards to try and catch a glimpse of a Nessy. Sadly they’d already got tucked up in bed for the night.

Day 3

Cruachan Reservoir

An early start to attempt a Munro – Ben Cruachan, no time to hang about to see what the weather was going to do. We were hopeful of fantastic views over the lochs and islands, but it wasn’t to be the case, we just climbed higher and higher into the clouds. We made it as far as the ridge between Ben Cruachan and Meall Cuanail, but with no summit in sight and a very icy descent still to make we called it a day. Route map

Watched the fireworks and listened to the ships sound their horns in the bay as Oban welcomed in 2009.

Day 4

Oban BayKilchurn Castle

A glorious day of sunshine to start the New Year, but no matter where we went it seemed there was always a view of Ben Cruachan bathed in sunlight taunting us! A gentle drive around Loch Awe and then a mystery drive along a foresty track that turfed us out at Loch Fyne, then some wonderful reflections at Kilchurn Castle with the last of the sunshine.

Day 5

From Oban a 5 minute ferry ride took us to the Island of Kerrera just across the sound. A 6 mile circular route took us around the Island via Gylen Caslte. Great views of Mull further across the water. Next time we go back it will be in a Sea Kayak, looked like the best way to explore.
